As a clinical pharmacologist, Dr. Chan was one of the few Asian investigators since the early 1990s to participate in phase 2-4 studies in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP). She was one of the leading investigators of the landmark RENAAL Study on prevention of diabetic kidney disease, for which her clinical trial unit was inspected by the US and Japan FDA and accredited by the China FDA. With her extensive experience in GCP, she has pioneered several disease management programs to translate evidence to clinical practice. Her particular focus is on risk stratification and adherence to structured care protocols using a multidisciplinary approach with proven benefits on clinical outcomes. On a basic research front, she is leading a multidisciplinary team to study the genetics of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and diabetic complications in Chinese population and its clinical application.
In 1999, she set up the Hong Kong Foundation for Research and Development in Diabetes—under the auspices of CUHK—to promote academic studies in diabetes through local and international training and education programs. In 2002, she established the Qualigenics Diabetes Centre as part of a university technology transfer project through academic-industrial collaboration. In 2005, she founded the Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity (HKIDO) to provide an integrated platform for research programs ranging from basic science to drug discovery and disease management.
